Softcover, bound in stapled white wraps, titled and decorated in indigo blue with a black & white illustration of the "Al Fresco Dining Hall in Sequoia National Park" pictured on the front cover. The covers are slightly rubbed with a small stain to the bottom right corner of the front cover and the name "Byrd" penciled at top right. 62 & [2] pages, with black & white textual and full-page illustrations. Very good. This issue includes an essay based on the minutes taken at the "Dinner to Circum Admiral Richard E. Byrd", illustrated from photographs. Included is a full-page illustration picturing all the members, attired in formal wear, who attended "The Dinner to Rear-Admiral Richard E. Byrd, May 18, 1938". Also included is H.B. MacDonald's 12-page essay "Among the Sequoias". Of particular note is the 12-page essay "Through Africa Unarmed" by Lewis N. Cotlow, illustrated with 5 photographs. The explorer, author and filmmaker Lewis Cotlow (1898-1987) served with the United States Merchant Marine during the First World War. He went on to pursue studies at George Washington University before participating in 30 expeditions which included travel to Africa, South America, Indonesia, the Arctic, the Amazon, Australia and New Guinea. From the 1930's through the 50's, Cotlow filmed many of his travels and expeditions. His first technicolor film, co-produced with wildlife photographer Armand Dennis, was filmed on location in Africa. Cotlow was awarded the Explorers Club Medal and the Order of Magellan. RARE.
